Starting Jan. 10, KFC restaurants across the nation will sell the temporary addition to the menu. The meat alternative is available in six to 12 pieces a la carte or as a combo and with a dipping sauce.

KELLY TYKO: Another plant-based option is coming to roost to kick off 2022. Kentucky Fried Chicken and Beyond Meat announced that they will release Beyond Fried Chicken nationwide Monday, more than two years after first testing the meatless option with consumers.

Starting Jan. 10, KFC restaurants across the nation will sell the temporary addition to the menu, which will be available while supplies last. “The mission from day one was simple – make the world-famous Kentucky Fried Chicken from plants,” said Kevin Hochman, president, KFC U.S. in a news release. “And now over two years later we can say, ‘mission accomplished.’”

The meat alternative is available in six to 12 pieces a la carte or as a combo and with a dipping sauce. Prices vary by location but will start at $6.99 before tax. In the release, the KFC and Beyond Meat note the product was not “prepared in vegan/vegetarian manner.”

KFC was the first national U.S. quick service restaurant chain to introduce plant-based chicken when it had a limited-run test in August 2019 at one Atlanta location, which sold out of the product in less than five hours.

In February 2020, the test was expanded to more than 70 locations in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Nashville, Tennessee, and surrounding areas. There was also a test in the summer of 2020 at select California restaurants that quickly sold out.

Beyond Meat CEO and founder Ethan Brown said in a statement that the product “delivers the delicious experience consumers expect from this iconic chain, but also provides the added benefits of plant-based meat”. SOURCE…
