STUDY: Eating meat causes inflammation linked to higher risk of cardiovascular disease

Chan School of Public Health has found that diets high in red and processed meat, sugary beverages, and refined grains promote inflammation in the body and increase the subsequent risk of heart disease and stroke… Studies have shown the link between inflammation and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease, hypertension, and stroke, among others… Diets that promote inflammation in the body may include foods high in red and processed meat, sugar, artificial trans-fat, and refined carbohydrates or grains…

The study, which appeared in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, revealed that dietary patterns with a higher pro-inflammatory potential were linked to higher cardiovascular disease risk… To arrive at the study’s findings, the researchers used the men and women from the Nurses’ Health Studies I and II spanning from 1986 to 2016, including up to 32 years of follow up. After excluding participants with missing diet information, more than 210,000 participants took part in the analysis. During the study duration, the team documented 15,837 incident cardiovascular disease cases, including 9,794 coronary heart disease (CHD) and 6,174 strokes.
